A New Beginning

The littlest member in the next generation of our tribe got married this weekend. As we stood in Thayer Park by Lake Skaneateles on a gorgeous fall morning, bells tolled unexpectedly in a nearby church to herald the beginning of Josh and Erika’s wonderful adventure.

The officiant - Josh’s dear friend - was nothing short of stellar. All of us were in tears by the time he pronounced them wed. Tears of marvel I call them - amazement at the radiance of the couple, the astonishment of how quickly our little fellow has grown up, the joy of parents and siblings gathering from near and far, the ethereal beauty of this autumn morning, the promise of colors whispering through the leaves and blessings from dear ones not present.

The rhythm of the lake and sunshine filled us with hope for the couple, hope of good times, wonderful memories and Lady Luck doing her magic.

As we gathered with local friends in a newly minted coffee shop called Pausa - Spanish for pause - we reflected on the brilliance of a serendipitous encounter leading to this perfect union.

Oktoberfest in downtown offered a perfect backdrop to continue our celebrations. Erika’s family wore drindles and lederhosens. Even her two year-old nephew was in a lederhosen and a Bavarian hat. Adorable was completely redefined! We cheered as Josh attempted to hit a soccer ball into a giant dartboard. On the third and final try, he hit bullseye and made our already elevated spirit soar sky high. The reward was more beer, of course!

Before the night ended, three generations gathered to savor drinks and delicious food while our toddlers ran wild. We hugged, we laughed and we took photos in a gallant effort to freeze time. When we turned in, we were filled with gratitude for each other and humility for how our kids bring joy to their circle.

May Josh and Erika forge a path of wonder and delight. May their adventure flourish in abundant ways. And as they grow and evolve, may our tribe continue to be their safety net.

Cheers to this remarkable beginning. 🥂
